The extremely talented boys perform their group song for the eager and excited audience members.

Many students and parents attended Tesoro’s unique Pops Concert on Monday, May 31 and Tuesday, June 1. This concert proved to be highly entertaining and a great success.

Many people widely known around campus, such as Brian Silver, the lead in this year’s spring musical “Fiddler on the Roof,” performed in this extravagant concert. He sang a beautiful song by Michael Buble called “Everything.” He truly wowed the audience with his talented voice.

“The concert overall was a huge success like it always is,” said Silver. ”This is my favorite concert of the year and its a great way to celebrate and say goodbye to all of the seniors.”

The concert featured music from every genre, while also including some very popular songs that every attendee was sure to love. Senior Caitlyn Connors performed in this magical concert.

“The Pops Concert is one of the most enjoyable concerts of the year!” stated Connors. “I love the flexibility we get in our song choice and how we are able to express ourselves. It was by far the most anticipated performance in the program.”

This concert was overall a great way to involve the students and provide Tesoro’s student body with a fun, entertaining night.

String Ensemble Performs at Disneyland

orch1

As the orchestra waits for their Disneyland escort, sopohomores Nick Sovronec and Kourosh Safai happily escape a scorching sun by sitting on a shady bench in Toontown.

On Tuesday, February 16th, the String Ensemble, led by Mrs. Olinger, traveled to Disneyland to showcase their talents. After submitting a recording of themselves, the orchestra was asked to perform at the Carnation Plaza.

The orchestra had the opportunity to look behind the scenes of Disneyland with a tour guide once they arrived. Once the orchestra was all dressed and warmed up, they walked all the way from Toontown to the performance area, seeing various employees in costume the whole way there. The orchestra then performed a twenty-minute show, which contained the patriotic compilation of American tunes, American Heartland.

Once the orchestra was dressed in ordinary clothes again, they were free to roam the park. Owing to the fact that there were various other musical groups present on the same day, the lines for popular rides weren’t any shorter than usual.

“After going on Splash Mountain at eight pm, we waited for an hour and a half to get on Indiana Jones. The wait wasn’t welcome,” junior Kara Koyamatsu said.

As the night fell, all students headed to the front of the park to catch a tram ride for the bus, arriving back at home for just enough time to sleep and be back at school for classes, including orchestra, the next day.

Upcoming choir concert is choir’s holiday present this winter

choir2Next week, Tesoro’s choirs are having their winter concert – the second choir concert of the year. The repertoire is set to include a variety of classical pieces along with the usual holiday mix.

“We’re doing our winter concert, so basically it’s classical and holiday, so, winter songs. There’s also people who are singing classical pieces, but more people are sing pop songs that are winter themed,” sophomore Cassie Coffman said.  “I know I’ll be auditioning to sing ‘Chestnuts Roasting’.”

Singers can audition for a solo in one of the upcoming songs, which is always a thrill in of itself. “Our auditions are Tuesday,” Coffman continued. “We can audition to do solos in every single song.”

With the large amount of singing groups Tesoro has, a large selection of songs is expected. “We have Women’s Ensemble, which is about eight girls, and they all sing different songs. They’re like barbershop, so the songs are usually sung with people as the accompaniment instead of instruments.” Coffman remarked.

The choirs have all been preparing since the end of their fall concert back in October. “My choir is all ready for all our songs. We’ve been ready for weeks now.” Coffman added. “We’ve actually started working on our stuff for the next concert.” (more…)

VISTA COMPTesoro’s Marching Band and Dance Guard members finished off their season on a high note as they snagged a first place victory at the Vista Invitational Field Tournament last weekend. Winning over five other highly competitive bands, the season was a success for the Titan Entertainment Unit (TEU).

Throughout most of Southern California, the TEU is one of the best performing units of its size this year, and many other band’s directors jokingly asked for them to, “go compete up north next year” so that they would have a chance to win in the southern region. Their performance at the Vista Invitational Field Tournament at Vista High School was the third first place award the TEU has received this year bringing the season to a close. This season’s unprecedented success was a great joy to the Entertainment Unit.   No other band in Tesoro’s history have taken first place at every competition they have participated in.

To celebrate their achievements and to send their seniors off, the musicians and performers spent the next day at Sea World. “If I wanted to see animals with tiny brains I could have just gone to drumline practice, but I did have fun! Nothing compliments a first place finish like watching Shamu do his thing.” Brandon Scapa, a member of drumline, jokingly said. (more…)

Tesoro Entertainment Unit snags first place at field show

mira mesa field show marching bandOn Saturday, November 7, Tesoro’s Entertainment Unit took two first places in a tournament at Mira Mesa in San Diego.

Marching Band and Dance Guard, performing their “Primary Colors of Music”, competed against several other Southern California high schools. This was their third competition of the season, and the best performance so far, as evidenced by the two first places.

“All the band leaders were freezing on the field for forty minutes in anticipation and excitement. It was the longest award ceremony ever. We were really surprised when we weren’t called for fifth, fourth, or third place. When they announced we were first, I almost cried,” junior Dance Guard member Meghin Sadsad said.

Today the Entertainment Unit is performing at their last field show of the season in Vista, which will be followed by a celebratory trip to SeaWorld.

A Capella singing 'Exaudi! Laudate!' with Mr. Hancock directing.

Choir’s first concert of the year gave audience members a wonderful treat this Thursday with 1 director, 1 pianist, 8 groups, 10 languages, 17 songs, and 133 singers. The obvious speciality at this concert was the astounding amount of languages present. The first group on stage was A Capella, performing songs like the Japanese “Hotaru Koi” by Ro Ogura and “Exaudi! Laudate!” by Beverly Patton. At the end of their performance, junior Hallie Appel sang solo on the song “Lydia” by Gabriel Faure with piano accompaniment, to be followed by sophomore soloist Meghan Mehta singing “Nel cor piu non mi sento” by Giovanni Paisiello.
Men’s Choir, singing an arrangement of Latin American folk songs, including “Nesta rua” and “Corrido de Macario Romero”, and “Gloria” by Dan Davison, were the next to sing. “Three Latin American Folksongs” featured soloists senior Justin Amigleo and junior Ethan Kokkelenberg.

Tesoro chamber orchestra's first performance of 'Gabriel's Oboe'.

Tesoro chamber orchestra's first performance of 'Gabriel's Oboe'.

Tesoro’s orchestras, featuring a special performance from the Tijerras Chamber Players, had quite the show during their first concert of the year last night, giving students and parents a glimpse of what’s to come for this year’s musical concerts.
Mixed emotions and nerves have been in the air for the orchestras as they readied themselves for the first concert of the year. “I’m so excited for the concert,” Christy Jung, a senior violinist said. “We’re playing ‘Bailes para Orquesta’ and ‘Gabriel’s Oboe’.”
The night started off with the Tijerras Chamber Players, a small group of professional instrumentalists as a treat for both students and parents. After a quick performance, Tesoro’s own chamber orchestra came on stage, breaking the norm and performing before the string ensembles for once, for their turn in the spotlight.
First in the queue for chamber orchestra was “Gabriel’s Oboe”, a moving piece from the popular 1986 film, “The Mission”. Normally an oboe solo for the main melody, the solo was instead performed by senior Alejandra Benitez on violin. The slow grace of the song quickly captivated the audience with its luring charm and gorgeous sound. Afterwards came a much more varied song titled “Bailes para Orquesta” by famous school-level composer Richard Meyer. The four dances, each with its own mood, ranging from the mysterious opening to the virtuosic middle section to the quick ‘tongue-in-cheek’ tango, all were played brilliantly by sophomore soloists Regine Goh and Kimmi Levin, to the backdrop and accompaniments of the rest of chamber orchestra.
